knit stitch formation on that needle.īegin with waste yarn and some rows of knitting. Here, as in any machine-knit fabric, if there are 2 or more empty needles side by side, any other than a single needle must be e wrapped, cast on, or have a loop lifted up from the row below (used in increases), or the result will be a ladder vs. The look I prefer among others I have tested, results when loops are hung in on every other needle, whether singly or in groups, and the next row is simply knit. The basis of this type of stitch is to create long loop stitches, and in turn, to re-hang them in various configurations. For this post, my swatch is knit in a random scrap yarn from my studio, on the 260 Brother Bulky machine. Most of my teaching has been on 4.5 mm machines, so the above swatches were executed in thinner yarns. Here are some ideas on creating a basic 3 loops “broomstick” cross. Some illustrations of this fabric may be found in my previous posts: forming long loops and stitches using cast on comb and weights or ruler, some long stitch swatches, a few more tips and ideas from the earliest post on the topic.

NOTE: The first full broomstick lace stitch of every row is the only one with 6 stitches- in this pattern. Yarn is behind broomstick, insert hook under first 5 loops, yo, pull up a loop, ch2, 5sc in 1 st 5 loops. (Some yarns are too slick to remove from the broomstick without the stitches sliding, but most can be worked off the broomstick just fine.) Pull up a loop for each chain- 130 loops on broomstick- loose enough to fit hook between loops and broomstick. The idea is the edge look like the completed end, but this is not crucial. Though I didn't get a photo of it, you may use any single loop to get a similar effect. NOTE: My previous photo does NOT show this as the back hump as I didn't realize, until I had completed the blanket, it was a detail I appreciated. Start with the next chain, insert hook under back bump and pull up a loop- like you have flipped your chain over- not under both loops. R1: ch130, loop the last chain onto broomstick. Both of these are ones she made and they look so soft.

My friend Pam, who encouraged me to try this stitch, works her prayer shawls in multiples of 4 for a more subtle appearance.
